Answer to Question 1

If you use the formula on page 343, BMI = weight in kilograms/height in meters2
Martha is 70 inches tall. 70 inches  2.54 centimeters/inch = 177.8 centimeters
177.8 centimeters / 100 centimeters per meter = 1.78 meters
(1.78 meters)2 = 3.2 meters2
Her weight is 125 pounds / 2.2 pounds per kilogram = 56.8 kilograms
Her BMI = 56.8 kilograms / 3.2 meters2 = 17.75
Or: BMI = weight (lb)  703 / height (in2) = 125  703 / (70)2 = 87875/4900 = 17.9
Martha would be considered underweight. Her BMI should be between 18.5 and 24.9 as shown in Table 9-1.
