Answer to Question 1

If you use the formula on page 343, BMI = weight in kilograms/height in meters2
Martha is 70 inches tall. 70 inches  2.54 centimeters/inch = 177.8 centimeters
177.8 centimeters / 100 centimeters per meter = 1.78 meters
(1.78 meters)2 = 3.2 meters2
Her weight is 125 pounds / 2.2 pounds per kilogram = 56.8 kilograms
Her BMI = 56.8 kilograms / 3.2 meters2 = 17.75
Or: BMI = weight (lb)  703 / height (in2) = 125  703 / (70)2 = 87875/4900 = 17.9
Martha would be considered underweight. Her BMI should be between 18.5 and 24.9 as shown in Table 9-1.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
