Food borne illness is due to the ingestion and presence of a harmful bacteria in the body. For example, Salmonella can infect and invade the intestines, causing a very serious illness. A food borne intoxication is due to the ingestion of a toxin produced by a bacterial species growing in foods. An example is Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin that can cause a very serious food poisoning illness.
