Answer to Question 1

Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death for both men and women, and is responsible for 6 of all cancer-related deaths. Because pancreatic cancer can seldom be diagnosed when it is still localized and surgically resectable and effective systemic therapies are lacking, the incidence rates are virtually the same as the mortality rates. Pancreatic cancer is frequently diagnosed late due to the vague and non-specific symptoms that accompany the disease; however, weight loss and anorexia are common symptoms at diagnosis. Pancreatic exocrine insufficiency due to obstruction of the pancreatic duct commonly results in malabsorption and steatorrhea. Most patients with pancreatic cancer also have hyperglycemia.
