Rapid, deep, and labored breathing commonly seen in people who have ketoacidosis or who are in a diabetic coma. Kussmaul breathing is a compensatory mechanism used to increase expiration of CO2, thereby decreasing pH to normal. Kussmaul breathing is named for Adolph Kussmaul, the 19th century German doctor who first noted it.
