Historically, severe child malnutrition was characterized as either protein deficiency called kwashiorkorthe disease of the weaned child; or miasmasthe emaciation caused by energy deficiency. Today, child malnutrition is described in terms of chronic malnutritionevidenc ed by stunting from long-term under nutrition; and severe acute malnutritioncharact erized by rapid weight loss, wasting, and nutritional edema from recent or sudden food deprivation.

There are many appropriate uses, with a sampling below:
 Menu planning in institutional settings, such as schools, hospitals, and long-term care facilities
 Evaluation of eating habits, such as in the NNMRRP programs
 Development of nutrition policy and nutrition education efforts
