Historically, severe child malnutrition was characterized as either protein deficiency called kwashiorkorthe disease of the weaned child; or miasmasthe emaciation caused by energy deficiency. Today, child malnutrition is described in terms of chronic malnutritionevidenc ed by stunting from long-term under nutrition; and severe acute malnutritioncharact erized by rapid weight loss, wasting, and nutritional edema from recent or sudden food deprivation.
