Answer to Question 1

Water molecules are polar and are strongly attracted to one another. When pure water is brought to a boil it bubbles but does not boil over. However, when pasta is added it begins to break down, disrupting the interaction between water molecules. As a result, the surface of each of the bubbles in the boiling water expands, causing the water to flow out of the pot. However, oil is nonpolar and does not mix well with water. When oil is added to the water beforehand it forms droplets at the surface that act as bubble breakers.

Answer to Question 2

Antacids are medicines that neutralize stomach acid. Although there are a variety of antacids on the market, they commonly contain one or more of the following active ingredients: aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, and sodium bicarbonate. The alkaline ingredient in the antacid reacts with the acid in the stomach and produces salt and water. Thus, the stomach acid is neutralized.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
