They may show inappropriate food behaviors such as hoarding in pockets or cubbies, stealing food from other children's plates, and asking for more food. Teachers should watch for patterns of this behavior. It isn't always easy to tell when a family is in the position of being food insecure and teachers need to use sensitivity in dealing with this issue.

Hunger can disrupt the healthy development of children. It can lead to weight loss, growth retardation, and weakened resistance to disease, and it can cause cognitive difficulties.
