Answer to Question 1

A teacher can look for signs of insufficient food and hunger, which are often more prevalent after a break from school. Food-insecure children may show behavioral changes such as lack of concentration, irritability, and an overwhelming desire to eat. They may show inappropriate food behaviors such as hoarding in pockets or cubbies, stealing food from other children's plates, and asking for more food. Teachers should watch for patterns of this behavior. It isn't always easy to tell when a family is in the position of being food insecure and teachers need to use sensitivity in dealing with this issue.

Answer to Question 2

Hunger can disrupt the healthy development of children. It can lead to weight loss, growth retardation, and weakened resistance to disease, and it can cause cognitive difficulties. Malnutrition from hunger or food insecurity can be especially harmful to children in the first years of life, when their bodies and brains are developing rapidly.

People who have myopia, or nearsightedness, are not able to see objects at a distance but only up close. It occurs when the cornea is either curved too steeply, the eye is too long, or both. This condition is progressive and worsens with time. More than 100 million people in the United States are nearsighted, but only 20% of those are born with the condition. Diet, eye exercise, drug therapy, and corrective lenses can all help manage nearsightedness.
