Answer 4

Answer: The ideal answer should include:

  • In compiling a list of proposed amendments, Madison drew from scores of proposals put forward by the state ratifying conventions.

  • He selected those, mostly dealing with individual rights, that could pass a Federalist- dominated Congress and would not dilute any of the proposed new governments powers.

  • Madison pushed twelve of the less controversial statements through the Congress as constitutional amendments.

  • Ten of these amendments were ratified. These amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.

  • By securing the freedoms covered under the Bill of Rights, Madison engineered a final set of compromises that ensured the acceptance and longevity of the Constitution.
