In compiling a list of proposed amendments, Madison drew from scores of proposals put forward by the state ratifying conventions.

He selected those, mostly dealing with individual rights, that could pass a Federalist- dominated Congress and would not dilute any of the proposed new governments powers.

Madison pushed twelve of the less controversial statements through the Congress as constitutional amendments.

Ten of these amendments were ratified. These amendments are known as the Bill of Rights.

By securing the freedoms covered under the Bill of Rights, Madison engineered a final set of compromises that ensured the acceptance and longevity of the Constitution.
