The most common treatment for this disorder is stimulant drugs; between 80 and 90 of all children diagnosed with ADHD are treated with these drugs. The drugs do seem to have positive effects, especially in the short-term. They tend to have their greatest effect within 2 to 4 hours after the drug is taken. Many children taking these drugs show improved classroom performance, with a reduction in class disruption, and increased on-task behavior. Because information on the long-term effects of medication is lacking, many experts recommend that a behavioral intervention be established.
