Although Erikson's stages of psychosocial development are sequential, the search for identity that begins in the stage of identity versus role diffusion

  overlaps with the stage of intimacy versus isolation and ends there.
  ends with generativity versus stagnation.
  comes to fruition only at the stage of identity versus despair.
