Answer to Question 1

The symptoms of marasmus include the halting of growth, wasting away of body
tissues, and eventually, death. Providing good nutrition for pregnant women,
ensuring that the infant is breast-fed on demand, and giving frequent check-ups to
monitor the baby's weight may prevent it.

Answer to Question 2

Marasmus is a disease of severe protein-calorie deficiency in early infancy. Growth
stops, body tissues waste away, and the infant eventually dies. Kwashiorkor is also
caused by a protein-calorie deficiency but is not as severe. The malnutrition in
kwashiorkor usually occurs after age 1. The protein deficiency makes the child more
vulnerable to the effects of other diseases such as diarrhea, influenza, and measles.
