Answer to Question 1

Students should demonstrate an understanding of the chemicals that can cross the
placenta and harm the prenatal child. Answers should deal primarily with the
obligation, if any, that society has to the unborn child and also the rights of the
mother to determine her own life.

Answer to Question 2

In the eighth week of pregnancy, the embryo's ears, eyes, heart, and sex organs are
undergoing critical development. Antibiotics introduced at this point could cause
deafness and staining of the tooth enamel. Applying risk analysis, at this point
Belinda's doctor should prescribe the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount
of time to treat her illness.
