What control do you think society should have over a pregnant woman to protect the fetus? What rights does the mother have? What rights does the fetus have? Be specific in your answer.

In her eighth week of pregnancy, Belinda has contracted a severe illness that had to be treated with antibiotics like streptomycin and tetracycline. She is very concerned that these medications may affect her developing embryo.

Answer to Question 1

Students should demonstrate an understanding of the chemicals that can cross the
placenta and harm the prenatal child. Answers should deal primarily with the
obligation, if any, that society has to the unborn child and also the rights of the
mother to determine her own life.

Answer to Question 2

In the eighth week of pregnancy, the embryo's ears, eyes, heart, and sex organs are
undergoing critical development. Antibiotics introduced at this point could cause
deafness and staining of the tooth enamel. Applying risk analysis, at this point
Belinda's doctor should prescribe the lowest possible dose for the shortest amount
of time to treat her illness.
