Answer to Question 1

Hazards for the mother include high blood pressure and emergency cesarean birth.
Hazards for the babies include an early birth, higher rates of death, disease and
disabilities, and slower development and weaker social bonds in some. The
development of more methods of overcoming infertility is responsible for the
increased number of multiple births in the United States.

Answer to Question 2

Students should indicate an understanding of X-linked traits and that the absence of
a second X chromosome makes males more vulnerable to X-linked disorders.
Because females have two X chromosomes, they are less likely to express X-linked
disorders but more likely to carry them. Examples: fragile X syndrome, hemophilia
