Adolescents are often awkward and gawky because of asynchronous growth, when different parts of the body growth at different rates. The hands and feet mature before the arms and legs. As a consequence, adolescent girls and boys may complain about big hands or feet. Legs reach peak growth before the shoulders and chest.
