Answer to Question 1

The student should indicate that industrialization of society shifted work roles away from the family. Instead of farming, engaging in trades, and other forms of self-employment, men, women, and children sold their time to perform in the labor force. Values for familism declined, and individualism began to rise. Control over one's labor was lost to the organization. Family time and activities were dictated by one's work schedule. During the Great Depression, many Americans lost their jobs. This negatively impacted the families' ability to survive. Families split up to seek out employment. F.D. Roosevelt put work programs in place and encouraged Americans to spend to stimulate the economy. Materialistic values emerged as a result. From this era, less leisure time from work resulted and less time for family was available.

Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
