It is acquired after infants develop a balance of trust and mistrust during the first stage of social development. Will is the knowledge that within limits, youngsters can act on their world intentionally. It is acquired after children develop a blend of autonomy, shame, and doubt during the second stage of development. Purpose is a balance between individual initiative and the willingness to cooperate with others. It is acquired after children moderate initiative and guilt during the third stage of development.
