Answer to Question 1

Caring for a chronically ill partner puts stress on the relationship as roles shift and the division of labor changes. Studies of partner caregivers of persons with Alzheimer's disease show that satisfaction with the relationship is much lower than for healthy couples. Partners report a loss of companionship and intimacy over the course of caregiving. The caregiving partner must deal with stressors such as coping with a spouse who does not remember a husband or wife's name, who acts strangely, or who has a chronic or fatal disease.
