Answer to Question 1

The marriage and family therapy discipline is based on substantial bodies of empirical research that show family problems and marital problems are best treated within the context of relationships. To this end, MFTs use Family Systems theory to understand a couple's interaction and relational patterns. Using what is referred to as solution-focused treatments, an MFT works with the couple to help them understand their marital problems as they exist now, and they focus on solutions and actions that help to resolve the problems. For example, in therapy sessions the couple and the MFT will explore the couple's roles, rules, and stages of their family's development. They will also determine the couple's interaction patterns (such as their communication skills and the ways in which they handle conflict), and find ways to improve on these. Sometimes one or both members of the couple will have a problem, such as depression or an addiction to alcohol or other substances. These problems, too, are addressed within the context of the couple's relationship, because in the practice of marriage and family therapy the unit of treatment is not the personit is the relationships in which the person interacts on a daily basis.
