Answer to Question 1

Parental risk factors for child maltreatment include a history of being abused themselves, ineffective parenting techniques and unrealistic expectations, and marital discord. Environmental risk factors for child maltreatment include cultural values that condone physical punishment, poverty, and social isolation. Three factors appear to mediate the impact abuse. First, ego resilience denotes children's ability to respond adaptively and resourcefully to new situations. The effects of abuse tend to be smaller when children are flexible in responding to novel and challenging social situations. Second, when maltreated children are cognitively engaged in school, they are less prone to antisocial and aggressive behavior. Third, when children have a positive representation of their mother, they suffer relatively fewer symptoms of maltreatment.
