Answer to Question 1

The student should indicate that Judith Wallerstein found in her 10 year study on children after divorce that children grew up anxious and low achieving, had low marriage rates, were more at risk for substance abuse, and were less likely to go to college. Research by Mavis Hetherington found that most children (80) were resilient and were able to adapt to their parents' divorce. A third view presented by Elizabeth Marquardt indicates that even in a quiet divorce, children undergo hardships not experienced by children from intact families.
