Primary sexual characteristics: females have their first menstruation (menarche) at about age 12, whereas for males, the first ejaculation (spermarche) is generally not until about age 13 .
Secondary sexual characteristics: these develop 1-2 years earlier in females than in males.
For females, they involve growth of pubic and armpit hair, breast development, and widening of the hips.
For males, they involve growth of pubic and armpit hair and deepening of the voice.
