Answer to Question 1

There are several ways a student can go with this essay, but the primary theme should note that (a) the illness requires two recessive genes in order to be expressed, so it is not just her genetic history that determines whether the child will have sickle cell disease; (b) even if she and her husband are both carriers of the gene it is more likely that the child will not develop the illness unless both she and her husband actually have sickle cell disease themselves, and (c) as long as either she or her husband contribute an allele for normal red blood cells, there is no way that their child will develop the sickle cell disease.

Answer to Question 2

False
