Answer to Question 1

Answer: The ideal answer should include:
1. In mixed media, artists can violate the integrity of painting as a medium as in Robert Rauschenberg's Monogram.
2. Artists can extend the space of the painting from a two- to a three-dimensional space, as in Kara Walker's Insurrection (Our Tools Were Rudimentary, Yet We Pressed On).
3. Artists can bring other media, such as photographs, into the work to create a direct means of commenting on social or political environments, as in Martha Rosler's Gladiators.
4. Artists can combine diverse objects to coexist in the same space, as in Rauschenberg's Monogram.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: The term denotation refers to the identifiable subject, such as a Madonna and Child. The connotation is what the subject would mean to a contemporary viewerin this case, a medieval Italian viewer would understand the subject as an image of ideal love, especially divine love for humanity.
