Answer to Question 1

Bypassing occurs when people assume that a word has the same meaning for everyone. Managers and employees often have different meanings for the same words. Vague phrases are sure to have different meanings for different people. Emoticons can cause misunderstandings. Cultural differences can cause bypassing problems, especially in global firms. Different words for the same meaning also cause bypassing problems.

Answer to Question 2

Email tone can anger the recipient (dispute-exacerbating email model), so edit carefully and be prepared to apologize for misunderstandings.
