Heterosexuals have been found to have lower victimization rates than lesbians and gay men. It could be that many have experienced considerable humiliation, bullying, and rejection at school that increases the likelihood of violence in adulthood. Within same-sex relationships, homophobia can increase abusive behavior if a partner uses it as a psychological weapon by threatening to expose the relationship to parents or employers.
