A new marketing/design/ideas business that has no client background, no testimonials, but a good creative team can find it hard to acquire clients. What is the best way to go about landing the first major client?

The best way is to network at trade fairs if you haven't got an introduction  if not find the email address and send a genuine email and ask if you can phone them to discuss your services

I know its cliche'... but cold calls are the best.

Do your homework first, so that you are more sure that you are talking with the right person in the right business, so that you do not waste you time.. or theirs..

Well, one idea is to hold a home-preview with close friends and family. Sometimes it works to provide free samples. If the clients are satisfied, they can offer referrals. I've done that before and it worked. Also, depending on your product  or service, you can go to some local shops and ask if they will sell a few samples for you and share in the profits. Think outside of the box.

Best wishes!
