Technological advances in contraception, especially the birth control pill, have decreased the rates of unplanned pregnancies and so-called shotgun marriages. Women, especially, have greater control over childbearing, can avoid unwanted nonmarital births, and aren't pressured to marry the child's father. Just as important, women in their forties and even fifties can become pregnant by means of reproductive technologies. As a result, many women postpone marriage because they believe that they're no longer bound by the biological clock that has traditionally limited their ability to have children.
