Answer to Question 1

a) Fewer assumptions about the population. Most important, the population need not be normally distributed or approximately so. Nonparametric tests do not assume the population has any specific distribution. b) The techniques can be applied when samples are small. c) Samples with data of the nominal and ordinal scales of measurement can be tested. d) Calculations by hand or by pocket calculator tend to be simpler. This is primarily due to the small sample sizes typically involved.

Answer to Question 2

A nonparametric test is one that makes no assumptions about the specific shape of the population from which a sample is drawn.
