In this case, the manager wants to show that the mean weight of a head of lettuce exceeds 1.7 pounds, this will be the research hypothesis. The research hypothesis is the claim that we wish to prove. Thus, we would set up the following null and alternative hypotheses:
H0 :   1.7
H1 :  >1.7
Note that the null and alternative hypotheses are stated in terms of , the population mean, and that the null hypothesis contains the equality. The research hypothesis is the alternative hypothesis. If the sample data lead us to reject the null, we will have evidence to suggest that the mean weight of lettuce exceeds 1.7 pounds.
