Answer to Question 1

In this case, the manager wants to show that the mean weight of a head of lettuce exceeds 1.7 pounds, this will be the research hypothesis. The research hypothesis is the claim that we wish to prove. Thus, we would set up the following null and alternative hypotheses:
H0 :   1.7
H1 :  >1.7
Note that the null and alternative hypotheses are stated in terms of , the population mean, and that the null hypothesis contains the equality. The research hypothesis is the alternative hypothesis. If the sample data lead us to reject the null, we will have evidence to suggest that the mean weight of lettuce exceeds 1.7 pounds.

There can actually be a 25-hour time difference between certain locations in the world. The International Date Line passes between the islands of Samoa and American Samoa. It is not a straight line, but "zig-zags" around various island chains. Therefore, Samoa and nearby islands have one date, while American Samoa and nearby islands are one day behind. Daylight saving time is used in some islands, but not in others—further shifting the hours out of sync with natural time.
