Both hemophilia A and von Willebrand disease cause excessive bleeding after minor injury, but in von Willebrand disease, the bleeding is not in the joints. In hemophilia A, there is a factor VIII deficiency, but patients with von Willebrand disease can synthesize factor VIII. However, an adequate level of von Willebrand factor is necessary to maintain an adequate level of factor VIII.
