Answer to Question 1

MRI can detect small carcinomas in dense breast tissue that is otherwise difficult to detect using a mammogram. In addition, an MRI can detect increase blood flow to the breast that is associated with the presence of a breast tumor. Given these advantages offered by an MRI, some clinicians use it as a supplementary screening procedure particularly for those with a strong genetic predisposition for breast cancer and who have BRCA1 and BRCA2.

Answer to Question 2

to destroy any small, undetected sources of metastatic tumor that may have been missed by previous surgical or radiation treatment.
