Answer to Question 1

The most common causes of cirrhosis are alcoholic liver disease and chronic hepatitis caused by HBV or HCV infections. The less common causes include an episode of severe liver necrosis, such as after an attack of severe viral hepatitis; various other drugs and chemicals that damage liver cells; various genetic diseases; and longstanding bile duct obstruction, which causes a special type of cirrhosis called biliary cirrhosis.

Answer to Question 2

Varicose veins result if the saphenous veins become dilated and their valves become incompetent. The blood tends to stagnate in the veins instead of flowing back normally to the heart, causing the veins to become elongated and tortuous. Varicose veins may also develop if the deeper veins become blocked or if their valves become damaged by previous thrombophlebitis.
