Estrogen also reduces the number and function of the osteoclasts. Thus, the decrease in estrogen levels that occurs at menopause results in increased resorption of bone. Release of catecholamines has no influence over osteoclast function. Increased movement of calcium and phosphate from bone into extracellular fluid is regulated by parathyroid hormone.
