Plasma cells are terminally differentiated B cells that express cytoplasmic but not surface immunoglobulin. They are negative for pan-B cell markers.

Patients with altered immune function have the strongest risk factor for development of a lymphoproliferative disorder. This includes patients who are immunocompromised and those with autoimmune disease.
