Answer to Question 1

ANS: A
Ringed sideroblasts and siderocytes in blood can be seen in myelodysplastic syndromes. Platelet and white counts are normal or decreased, red cell morphology is abnormal, and anemia is present. Dysmyelopoiesis and dyserythropoiesis are present in the bone marrow.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: C
Bone marrow or stem cell transplantation is the therapy of choice for patients younger than 55 years old with chronic myelogenous leukemia if an HLA-matched donor can be found. It is not a therapeutic choice for either essential thrombocytosis or polycythemia vera.
