Cells from the malignant tissue should be evaluated for the acquired DNA mutation. Many malignancies, both hematopoietic and solid tumors, have acquired DNA mutations, some of which are characteristic for certain malignancies. Because these are acquired mutations, they will not be found in all cells but only those affected by the mutation or mutations.
