On a standard reticulocyte preparation with new methylene blue, 100 cells are counted containing blue-stained granulofilamentous material. The red blood count is 3.22  1012/L, and the hematocrit is 30.

Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
The RPI is greater than 3, which suggests an adequate bone marrow response. Because the MCV is in the reference range, the anemia is normocytic.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: B
The MCV = 30/3.22 x 10 = 93 fL.
