Answer: MDS results from persistent gradual expansion of abnormal hematopoietic stem cells that leads to ineffective hematopoiesis. Chromosomal abnormalities accompany the MDS pathogenesis >50 of the time.

Answer: Evidence of dyserythropoiesis in peripheral circulation includes anemia, macrocytosis, oval macrocytes, dimorphism, Howell-Jolly bodies, NRBCs, basophilic stippling, anisocytosis, poikilocytosis, and reticulocytopenia. Evidence of dyserythropoiesis in the bone marrow includes megaloblastoid erythropoiesis, nuclear fragmentation and budding, karyorrhexis, multinucleation, defective hemoglobinization, vacuolization, and ringed sideroblasts.
