Answer: Sideroblastic anemia results from disturbances in enzymes that regulate heme synthesis. Nonferritin iron accumulates in the mitochondria. The bone marrow shows erythroid hyperplasia with ineffective erythropoiesis. Increased erythropoiesis leads to increased iron absorption and iron overload. The method of detection in the laboratory is by performing iron studies and bone marrow examination.
