Endocarditis: inflammation of the lining of the heart chambers and valve surfaces, usually caused by a bacterial infection. Myocarditis: inflammation of the cardiac muscle caused by a virus, bacteria, or parasite. Pericarditis: inflammation of the outer surface or sac covering the heart; usually results from infection, inflammation, or other conditions in the body. Rheumatic fever and heart disease: the endocardium and valves become inflamed following a sore throat caused by Group A Strep.
