Answer to Question 1

ANS: D
A feature of bulimia is an inability to control binges. Individuals with bulimia have a high degree of dissatisfaction with appearance and often have low self-esteem. Physical findings may be a noticeable loss of dental enamel on the lingual surfaces of the front teeth as a result of recurrent vomiting. Teeth may become chipped, and there may also be an increase in dental cavities. The parotid glands may also be enlarged. Calluses or scars may be noted on the dorsal surface of the hand from inducing vomiting. If the dominant hand is used, calluses or scars may be evident on only that hand. There may be electrolyte imbalancesfrequentl y hypokalemia, hyponatremia, and hypochloremia. Assessment for bulimia nervosa includes the questions listed in Box 17.15.

Answer to Question 2

ANS: A
While the restricting pattern is more common in anorexia, binge-purge behaviour may also exist. Although purging may follow a binge episode, purging may also be used even after the consumption of small amounts of food.
