Answer to Question 1

Answer: D

Administering bicarbonate to correct acidosis increases the risk for hypernatremia, hyperosmolality, and fluid volume excess. This is the order that the nurse should question before providing. Treatment of metabolic acidosis includes correction of fluid balance. An infusion of normal saline would be appropriate for this client. As metabolic acidosis is corrected, potassium shifts back into the intracellular space. This shift can lead to hypokalemia and cardiac dysrhythmias. Serum potassium levels should be carefully monitored during treatment. Arterial blood gases are used to evaluate treatment and guide additional therapies.

Answer to Question 2

Answer: A, C, E

Benign tumors are slow-growing, stay in one area, are easy to remove, and push other tissue out of the way. Malignant tumors are more difficult to remove. They invade neighboring tissue and can return once removed.

Many people have small pouches in their colons that bulge outward through weak spots. Each pouch is called a diverticulum. About 10% of Americans older than age 40 years have diverticulosis, which, when the pouches become infected or inflamed, is called diverticulitis. The main cause of diverticular disease is a low-fiber diet.
