Echocardiography is an imaging test that uses ultra-high-frequency sound waves emitted by an ultrasound transducer placed on the chest or swallowed and positioned in the esophagus. The sound waves bounce off the heart, creating echoes that are changed into an image by a computer. This procedure shows the heart contracting and relaxing. The resulting image is called an echocardiogram.
