The parasympathetic division of the nervous system is responsible for functions such as decreasing the heart rate, changing the diameter of the irises in response to changing levels of light, gastrointestinal peristalsis, salivary gland stimulation, and preparing the body for sexual activity. Norepinephrine is the neurotransmitter for the parasympathetic nervous system.
