Amnesia is partial or total loss of long-term memory due to trauma or disease of the hippocampus. The patient is said to be amnestic. In retrograde amnesia, no events before the onset of the amnesia can be recalled. In anterograde amnesia, no events after the onset of the amnesia can be recalled. In global amnesia, all memories are lost.
